Why we made this game
All over the world there are dishes that locals think of as comfort food, while visitors take one look (or one sniff) and back away. Even something as everyday as a hot dog can seem strange somewhere else. We made this game because we thought food would be even more fun to talk about if you learned these dishes by asking, “Who would be thrilled to eat this?”
To figure out where a customer is from, you only get a greeting in their language and a gesture, never their appearance. By noticing things like Hangul, letters such as “å” or “þ”, the difference between “G’day,” “Cheers” and “Howdy,” or customs like bowing and cheek kisses, you pick up a little about the world's languages and cultures as you play.
About the game's content
- “Weird” describes how unusual these dishes can seem to people who didn't grow up with them. Every dish in the game is a real food that people in its country or region have enjoyed for a long time, and we don't mean to make fun of anyone.
- To avoid judging people by appearance, every customer is drawn as the same round character, no matter where they're from.
- The lines and gestures are just examples of words and customs you might hear or see in each country. Not everyone in a country talks or acts the same way.
- The dish descriptions are short intros written for the game. If you try any of these foods for real, please be careful about allergies, food safety and local rules.
